Salt Room FAQ
Q: Salt is bad for us right? Why are salt rooms good then?
Humans cannot live without salt, but eating too much can upset the body in a myriad of ways. Primarily, it can increase blood pressure, which can lead to increased risk of heart attack for one.
Eating salt is very different to breathing it in, or absorbing it through the skin. By eating it, your body must process the salt (and any by-products, eg: anti-caking agent) via the digestive tract (including the kidneys) and dispose of it this way. Too much of this does not make for a happy body.
On the other hand, breathing in salt through your respiratory system, allows your body to decrease inflammation and rid itself of additional mucus. It also allows detoxification to take place.
Absorbing it via the skin allows the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of salt really get to work. Helpful to anyone with an inflammatory skin conditions – eg: eczema or psoriasis.
Q: Will it hurt?
Generally not, though in certain cases, you may wish to ponder the old saying ‘to rub salt into the wound’. If you have cuts or abrasions on your skin, the salt will sting it to varying degrees. If you have a minor cut on a finger for instance, we can supply a natural balm to coat this for your session. If you have a more chronic condition such as psoriasis, the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of salt are something that will aid your condition, but do know that depending on its severity, it may sting a little.
Q. Is it safe?
Salt therapy is a clinically proven and safe treatment. Our halogenerators constantly monitor and record the rooms levels including humidity, temperature & salt concentration.
Q: Are there any side effects?
You may experience a clearing of excess mucus from your body during, immediately after, or in the days following your session. This is a positive sign that your body’s detoxification channels are working. It is a positive side effect.
Q. Can you overdose?
Q: Will it increase my blood pressure?
No. It will not affect your blood pressure as you are not eating it. Digesting salt through eating it is very different to inhaling it or absorbing it through the skin. The body uses completely different pathways for processing both of these.
Q. Won’t I catch other people’s colds or illnesses?
Salt by its very nature is antibacterial. For this reason, salt rooms are highly sterile environments where you should not ‘catch’ anything. Salt has been used as a preservative for hundreds of years as it does not allow bacteria or other pathogens to flourish in its presence. Our halogenerator enters a cleaning phase after each session to help purify the air.
Q: Is it safe for children and babies?
Salt therapy is suitable for all age groups and babies over 6mnths.
Q. Have clinical studies been done?
A: Absolutely. We have a folder of clinical studies or click here to view some of these studies. Australia is a little behind in it's research of salt therapy, however doctors in Europe and USA endorse salt therapy as a benefit in addition to taking current medication if applicable. Please see our clinical research page here. Please see Dr Ticknell's video here for more information.
Q: What should I wear?
Something comfortable! There are no special requirements here. Wearing less clothing (e.g. shorts and singlet) will allow more of your skin to be exposed to the healing benefits of the salt therapy. The rooms are always heated to a comfortable temperature so you shouldn’t feel cold. For those that are cold, we can supply blankets. We advise anyone with skin problems to try and wear as little ‘product’ (e.g. make up, moisturiser, etc.) as possible to allow more exposure and absorption to enhance the healing benefit. We provide shoe covers which must be worn throughout sessions.
Q: How long are sessions?
Sessions are 45 minutes long.
Q: What should I expect during my session?
During your session you should expect to feel relaxed! The more relaxed you are, the deeper your breaths will generally be resulting in more benefit to you. The abundance of negative ions in the room’s air aid relaxation naturally.
Q. What should I expect after my session?
A: Different people will experience different things. The most common experiences include easier & deeper breathing, a clearing of the airways and an expulsion of additional mucus. This additional mucus may be immediately expelled, or in the days following your session. This is a positive effect allowing your body to detoxify naturally.
Q. How many sessions will I need?
Different conditions and people will require a different number of sessions. The more chronic a condition has become, generally means more sessions may be required. An individual’s constitution will play a role as well. By constitution, we refer to a person’s ‘make up’ – whether they seem made of steel, or if they catch every bug going around, or somewhere in between etc. Your age and overall state of health will also affect the number of visits required as well. Most people seem to require a minimum of 3 – 5 sessions.
Q. I feel good, will salt rooms still help me?
You do not need to be sick to visit our salt rooms. Athletes use our salt rooms to enhance their performance pre-race or event as it increases their lung capacity. The negative ions in the room’s air will also help to stimulate your serotonin levels, enhancing your feelings of wellbeing. Serotonin is your body’s natural feel good chemical.
Q. I’ve heard of salt pipes, why not just use that?
Salt pipes may provide relief to certain conditions to a more minor degree than the complete exposure within our salt rooms.
Q. Is it good for stress?
Absolutely! The negative ions in the air help to stimulate your body’s natural serotonin levels (your body’s ‘feel good’ hormone). The blissful and quiet environment also allows you to step away from your everyday grind leaving you with little else to do apart from breathing deeper and slower and generally slowing you down (especially your stress levels).
Q. What is a halogenerator?
A halogenerator is the machine that crushes & pumps the salt into the rooms air. Salty Kisses choose to use the IIRIS-136 salt generator which has undergone several studies & design improvements. Today, IIRIS-136 can be found in numerous SPAs all over the world. It can offer salt aerosol concentrations depending on your condition. Generally we treat more people with allergies, skin conditions and general cold/sinus issues, so our concentration is based on these ailments. If you require a stronger dose for another condition please advise us before you book your session.

Q: What can I add to MicroSilk baths?
You may add bath salts, teas, oils, and aromatherapy oils to a MicroSilk Bath. You will notice that the amount of aromatherapy oils necessary will be reduced in a MicroSilk Bath. The oils will float to the surface and be aerosolized with the anions, rather than being emulsified in the bath water. If you are using a bath additive to treat a skin condition, be sure to check with your doctor before using it in MicroSilk.
Q: Should I put lotion or medicine on before or after MicroSilk?
After. MicroSilk cleans the skin even better than soap, so any lotions or creams will be removed during the bath. Applying lotion after the bath is encouraged to lock in moisture.
Q: How sanitary is the system?
Jason baths include a series of specially engineered features to keep the system clean including positive drain plumbing, V-Jets, purge cycles, dry air channels, and ozone (O3) to sanitize the water. Collectively, these features are known as Sani-Design.
Q: If this is lifting impurities out of my body, where do they go?
MicroSilk microbubbles bind to impurities and lift them away from the body to the water’s surface. The impurities gather around the edge of the bath for easy rinsing when the bath is complete.
Q: Where does the oxygen come from?
The oxygen comes from the ambient air around you. It is drawn into the MicroSilk system through a venturi and dissolved at elevated pressures through our patented process.
Q: Are gases other than oxygen present in the bath? Will they have an effect on my skin?
MicroSilk is fueled by ambient air, and oxygen is most easily dissolved in the water. So, all gases in the air around you are then increased in the bath, but only the oxygen can be used by our skin’s cells.
Q: If I am diagnosed with _________, will MicroSilk work for me?
While we have heard about great improvements in our customers’ cases of eczema, psoriasis, ichthyosis, irritated skin, rashes resulting from chemotherapy, and a number of other conditions, everyone’s skin is different. The oxygen levels in MicroSilk are safe and contribute greatly to health and well-being. Consult with your doctor regarding treatment of particular skin conditions.
Q: How long will the effects of MicroSilk last?
We have received customer responses giving time ranges from 12 hours up to 3 days. Everyone’s skin is different.
Q: Can I put my head and face in it?
Yes; the most comfortable way to do so is to use the MicroSilk Wand. The wand fits into a MicroSilk jet, allowing you to apply MicroSilk directly where you want it.
Q: Does a MicroSilk® only bath purge itself?
Yes. The MicroSilk® system is designed to drain itself after every use, and does not require an air/power assisted purge.
Q: Does a MicroSIlk® only Bath have a Blower?
No, MicroSilk® produces billions of microbubbles by pressurizing a small volume of water and releasing it back into the bathing well at near atmospheric pressure.
Q: Does a MicroSilk® only Bath have a heater?
No, a MicroSilk® bath maintains the temperature of the bath water through the heat energy created when the microbubbles implode (collapse) beneath the waters surface.
